(HYBRID) Join us on one of the special Buddha Days, the Day of Miracles, where merits are greatly magnified! This short sutra, also known as the โ€˜Vajra Smasherโ€™, cuts through to the very root of all confusion and suffering. As one of the most well-known sutras of Mahayana Buddhism, it is framed as a discourse on the Buddhist concept of emptiness, the โ€˜wisdom gone beyondโ€™, the very essence of the Buddhist view.

Composed as a lively conversation between the Buddha and Subhuti, this text illustrates again and again the emptiness of inherent existence. Once nearly lost to history, the sutra was rediscovered in the Dunhuang caves in the late 1800s, and its full translation only emerged in recent years. It holds the distinction of being the worldโ€™s oldest known printed bookโ€”a testament to its enduring spiritual and cultural significance.

โ€œThe Diamond Cutter Sutra is unbelievable. It is one of the most profitable practices, because the root of all sufferingsโ€ฆ is the ignorance holding the โ€˜Iโ€™ as truly existentโ€”even though it is empty of thatโ€ฆ The only antidoteโ€ฆ is the wisdom realizing emptiness. This is the subject of the Diamond Cutter Sutra: emptiness. Each time you read it, it leaves a positive imprint. Without much time or difficulty, it is easy to actualize wisdom.โ€

Lama Zopa Rinpoche

With a backstory that reads like a spiritual thrillerโ€”from ancient caves to modern scholarshipโ€”this recitation invites you to experience the sutra not just as scripture, but as a living transmission. Let its verses challenge your perceptions, dissolve conceptual boundaries, and open the door to the wisdom beyond words.

Reciting the Diamond Cutter Sutra is like wielding a spiritual diamondโ€”it cuts through illusions, the deep innate ignorance and confusion, and reveals the ultimate nature of all things. Whether youโ€™re new to Buddhist teachings or a seasoned practitioner, this event offers a chance to connect with one of the most transformative texts in the Buddhist canon.

All are welcome. Bring your voice (and your glasses!) and letโ€™s recite for the benefit of all beings!
