Diamond Cutter Study Group

(IN-PERSON) Also known as the โVajra Smasherโ, this short sutra cuts through the very root of all confusion and suffering, and is the essence of the Buddhist view. It is one of the most well-known sutras of Mahayana Buddhism, framed as a discourse on the Buddhist concept of emptiness, the โwisdom gone beyondโ.
Composed as a lively conversation between the Buddha and Subhuti, this text illustrates again and again the emptiness of inherent existence. Once nearly lost to history, the sutra was rediscovered in the Dunhuang caves in the late 1800s, and its full translation only emerged in recent years. It holds the distinction of being the worldโs oldest known printed bookโa testament to its enduring spiritual and cultural significance.
โIn just 6,000 wordsโthe entire essence of Buddhaโs teaching on Wisdom is expressed.โ

A diamond is the hardest naturally occurring substance. You canโt cut it, but it can cut through any substance. A diamond is extremely valuable and, in the way it reflects light, exceedingly beautiful. Just like a diamond, this sutra is a precious tool that reflects the brilliance of the Buddhaโs teaching and enables us, if we give it the chance, to cut through whatโs hardest in our lives: our own self-ignorance.
Theme and Core Paradox for Each Session:
- The Methodology Boot Camp: Walking is not walking. Establishes the “Seven-Step Search” engine.
- The Four Notions of Self: A Being is not a Being. The most critical root-delusion to shatter.
- Seeing Beyond Appearances: A Body is not a Body. Direct attack on our most intimate “sign”: the physical form.
- The Paradox of Giving: A Gift is not a Gift. Transforms basic ethics into empty, infinite action.
- The Ungraspable Mind: Mind is not Mind. Addresses the “observer”โthe final fortress of the self.
- The Illusion of Merit: Merit is not Merit. Breaks spiritual materialism and attachment to “getting” something.
- The Teacher and the Teaching: No Teaching was spoken. Prevents clinging to the “raft” of the philosophy itself.
- Perfect Peace & Patience: Peace is not Peace. Shows how non-attachment creates invincible emotional resilience.
- The Non-Attainment of Truth: No Truth to attain. Shatters the idea of enlightenment as a “destination.”
- The Equality of All Things: High is not High. Re-introduces ethics from a state of total non-dual equality.
- The Still Point of Motion: Coming is not Coming. Deconstructs time and space (the universe as a collection of dust).
- Neither Nothing nor Something: Views are not Views. The “Safety Net”: Avoiding the trap of nihilism.
This course is most suitable for established students or the committed beginner.
Understanding the sutra through these two methods – the cutter and the chariot – allows us to engage fully in our daily lives without being weighed down by rigid identities. When we dismantle the presumption of a concrete, truly existent self, we stop viewing every life event through the tiny, anxious lens of “me” and “mine”. This reduces conflict and alienation. We can communicate, work, and function using conventional names and concepts, but we do so freely, without being enslaved by the delusion that these concepts represent absolute truths.
With a backstory that reads like a spiritual thrillerโfrom ancient caves to modern scholarshipโthis study group invites you to experience the Diamond Cutter not just as scripture, but as a living transmission. Over 12 classes, our group study of the sutra will challenge your perceptions, dissolve conceptual boundaries, and open the door to the wisdom beyond words.
โThe Diamond Cutter Sutra is unbelievable. It is one of the most profitable practices, because the root of all sufferingsโฆ is the ignorance holding the โIโ as truly existentโeven though it is empty of thatโฆ The only antidoteโฆ is the wisdom realizing emptiness. This is the subject of the Diamond Cutter Sutra: emptiness. Each time you read it, it leaves a positive imprint. Without much time or difficulty, it is easy to actualize wisdom.โ
