SUMMARY:GLEN SVENSSON: How to Cultivate Mental Balance & Well-Being
DESCRIPTION:One-off event with visiting guest speaker. \nDiscover how to cultivate inner well-being through focusing on four types of mental balance: motivational\, attentional\, cognitive and emotional). With his clear and structured teaching style\, Glen emphasises the integration of philosophical view\, meditation and daily life conduct. \nIn this 2-hour talk we will have a short 10 min break in the middle\, a guided meditation after the break\, and time for Q&A at the end. The talk is based on the article: Mental Balance & Well-Being (Building Bridges between Buddhism & Western Psychology) by Alan Wallace & Shauna Shapiro. \nClinical psychology has focused primarily on the diagnosis and treatment of mental disease\, and only recently has scientific attention turned to understanding and cultivating positive mental health. The Buddhist tradition\, on the other hand\, has focused for over 2\,500 years on cultivating exceptional states of mental well-being as well as identifying and treating psychological problems. \nWe can draw on centuries of Buddhist experiential and theoretical inquiry as well as current Western experimental research to highlight specific themes that are particularly relevant to exploring the nature of mental health. We will discuss the nature of mental well-being and present an innovative model of how to attain such well-being through the cultivation of four types of mental balance: conative\, attentional\, cognitive\, and affective. \n

SUMMARY:Healing Anxiety & Depression
DESCRIPTION:6-week course from 30 January – 5 March (possible extra class on 12 March) \nUsing Buddhist psychology we can cut through the very root of unhappiness and fear\, to reveal the innate goodness and peace at the heart of our being. In Buddhist psychology\, unhappiness is viewed as a symptom\, and the disturbing emotions as the cause. The very root of these afflictive states of mind is our distorted and negative self-view. By recognising and developing a realistic appreciation of our innate human qualities\, we will be able to naturally overcome our fears and become happier. Topics include: \n\nStep-by-step methods to overcome disturbing emotions like clinging and anger\nHow to listen to the message our depression or anxiety is trying to tell us\nSimple techniques to cultivate positive states of mind\n\nThe course is led by registered FPMT western teacher Miffi Maxmillion\, who has been leading this series for over a decade. These techniques are not just for Buddhists\, they are universal and can be easily adapted to any tradition. It is ideal for first time students\, as well as for those returning for a ‘top-up’. \nThe classes are by donation and include the main presentation\, short reflections\, selected readings\, and time for questions. Although the classes are sequential you can join at any time. There is a workbook for the course ($20) with all meditations\, reflection sheets\, summaries\, and powerpoint slides. \n

SUMMARY:Vajrasattva Cleansing Meditation
DESCRIPTION:Held on a Friday evening once a month. \nGuided meditations to purify negative actions\, speech and emotions. Vajrasattva meditation and chanting practice helps us to connect with the innate purity of our mind. Combined with the Four Opponent Powers\, we can begin to overcome destructive habit patterns and purify negative imprints left on our mind by past actions. \nThis monthly practice includes a guided visualisation of Vajrasattva\, the four opponent powers\, and chanting the 100-syllable mantra so that our entire experience changes from one of limitation and faults\, to the blissful resonance of enlightened purity. \nThe Vajrasattva meditations use the natural creativity of our mind to bring forth positive qualities and transform negativities into wisdom. Each element of the visualisation and practice corresponds to a specific enlightened quality – one that we can develop ourselves. \n

SUMMARY:From Afflictions to Perfections Game
DESCRIPTION:One-off event\, part of the Discovering Buddhism course. \nA board game with a difference – invented right here at LTC – and a highly enjoyable way to integrate your Buddhist study and connect deeply with your fellow students on a Dharma level. We share stories of our own experiences\, successes and failures along the Dharma path. Playing this game produces as much laughter and merriment as it does thought and concentration! \nLoosely based on Monopoly\, this Buddhist game is played with unique lam rim cards that demonstrate how we can overcome negative mental factors\, and how tenacious we have to be to develop our positive qualities! We collect unique Buddhist cards and qualities to help us progress along the path. Unlike Monopoly\, this game encourages you to become a fully enlightened buddha\, not a real-estate mogul! The deck is made up of 108 cards detailing the 6 Perfections\, 11 positive mental factors\, 6 root delusions and 20 secondary afflictions\, the 4 Immeasurables\, and other wild cards such as ‘bodhicitta’ and ‘guru devotion’. There are also various instruction cards to pick up\, asking for examples from the news or your own life that illustrate these mental factors. \nWe play in small groups\, divided into pairs so we can help each other. There is a booklet cheat-sheet with all the cards to help with the questions. The aim of the game is to collect all positive cards and discard all negative ones as ‘true cessations’. \n

SUMMARY:Habits for Happiness
DESCRIPTION:7-week course from 4 February – 17 March. \nDiscover how to break destructive habit patterns and replace them with lasting habits for happiness. Using both Buddhist psychology and western neuroscience techniques\, discover practical methods to break bad habit patterns\, and encourage activities and attitudes that bring peace and happiness\, raise our self-esteem and result in natural confidence. \nPractice effective techniques to recognise and deal with destructive habits – be they to do with physical activity and how we treat others\, with speech and how we communicate\, or with our own thoughts and feelings. Once we discover that we can deconstruct our negative behaviour\, we can replace it with beneficial activities that cultivate and enhance peace of mind. Topics include: \n\nWhat triggers our negative habits and compulsions\nHow the behavioural law of cause and effect (karma) works\, and what we can do about it\nSimple techniques to cultivate positive mental habits\n\nThis course is ideal for first-time students\, and relevant for both Buddhists and non-Buddhists. Although the classes are sequential you can join at any time. The classes include short guided reflections\, selected readings\, homework activities and plenty of time for questions.

SUMMARY:Medicine Buddha Puja
DESCRIPTION:Held once a month on the Tibetan 15th\, usually full moon. \nThis practice helps connect us with the universal healing energy of the Buddha. We make offerings\, sing praises\, recite mantras and make individual dedications. This popular puja is sung entirely in English\, and enjoyed Buddhists and non-Buddhists alike. Bring your medicines and put them on the altar to be blessed\, and then take them home again. All welcome – especially beginners! No need to book\, just come along. \nIf you cannot make it to the puja but would still like to be involved\, you can sponsor a puja by donating securely online. We invite you to also email in your dedications to be read on the night. You can dedicate for the well-being of friends and family\, for the sick and vulnerable\, for healing the planet\, and for the success of your studies\, of a project\, and your Dharma aspirations. \nWe recite the special prayers to each of the seven healing Buddhas with their specific abilities and promises to help beings. Just hearing their names\, and the many ways they promised to help beings\, can remove external obstacles and internal problems. We dedicate for sick friends and relatives\, the success of our positive endeavours\, and for global harmony. \nThe Healing Buddha has promised to help all those who are sick and dying. He is depicted holding a bowl continuing the five kinds of medicines. This puja helps to clear and avert obstacles due to sickness and diseases. The blessings from Medicine Buddha prevents one from falling into the lower states of rebirth. Those already in a lower state of rebirth will be quickly liberated and will take rebirth in a precious human body. This puja is recommended by Lama Zopa Rinpoche as particularly effective during these difficult times. \n

SUMMARY:Heart of Wisdom Sutra
DESCRIPTION:4-week course from 11 February – 3 March. \nCareful study and contemplation of the Heart Sutra will lead us to a profound understanding of reality\, through our correct understanding of emptiness. Although short\, this sutra presents in condensed form all the explicit and explicit teachings necessary to attain the perfect state of buddhahood. Even a small understanding of the empty and dependent nature of phenomena can revolutionise our thinking and have far-reaching consequences for both our present and our future peace and happiness. \nPlease join us  in this short 4-week course to unlock the profound and vast meaning of the sutra. \nThe Buddha’s sole purpose was to help living beings\, without any bias\, to free themselves from suffering and reach the supreme state of happiness. Everything he taught was intended to lead to the understanding of emptiness. Understanding emptiness enables us to attain freedom.

SUMMARY:Heart of Wisdom Sutra
DESCRIPTION:4-week course from 12 February – 4 March. \nCareful study and contemplation of the Heart Sutra will lead us to a profound understanding of reality\, through our correct understanding of emptiness. Although short\, this sutra presents in condensed form all the implicit and explicit teachings necessary to attain the perfect state of buddhahood.

SUMMARY:Protector Prayers
DESCRIPTION:Held on the Tibetan 29th whenever possible. \nSpecial chants and ritual praises to strengthen our connection to the Dharma and dispel interferences\, distractions and obstacles. We chant the prayers in Tibetan\, and practice using the traditional instruments as shown to us by Geshe Zopa. This practice is traditionally done on Tibetan 29th Protector Day\, and most suited for those with a a background in tantric practice\, but open to all. \nMost suited for in-depth practitioners with existing practice commitments\, but open to all. As we are relatively new to this practice\, we envisage that in 2017 we will learn the tunes\, the meaning of the praises\, and how to use the musical instruments correctly. This may mean that we do a prayer several times until we get it right! Participants will also be able take turns in making the ritual tea and rice ceremonial offering. \n

SUMMARY:LOSAR (Tibetan New Year) Vajrasattva Tsog

Lama Yeshe passed away on Losar in 1984\, and this is our opportunity to strengthen our connection with his teachings and all the amazing activities of the FPMT. \n

SUMMARY:Heart of Wisdom Sutra

SUMMARY:Virtual Pilgrimage
DESCRIPTION:\nSpecial event held once every few years. \nJoin us for a unique inner journey as we explore the Twelve Deeds of the Buddha’s life by enacting a traditional pilgrimage\, with prayers\, offerings and short readings from the sutras. Discover the stories\, pictures and events from the time of the Buddha\, and share inspiration from LTC student’s actual travels. This is a wonderful occasion to enjoy the company of fellow students whilst completing this inspiring Buddhist activity. \n\n\nPilgrimage is an essential practice in Buddhism\, but many of us do not have the opportunity to travel. So on Lama Zopa Rinpoche’s advice\, we accomplish this with a stress-free\, virtual pilgrimage. We set up mini-altars\, representing the major holy sites where the Buddha taught\, right here in our own gompa! \nThis activity is also a completion activity of the Discovering Buddhism course\, so we encourage you to take this opportunity as we only hold this event every few years. \n\n\nWhether the pilgrim’s destination is the Potala\, Bodhgaya or a Buddhist temple in Carindale\, enlightenment is the goal. All the teachings of the Buddha aim to rescue beings from the ocean of suffering\, and pilgrimage is a skilful means of bringing people to the feet of the Buddha. It is a way to accumulate merit and cultivate wisdom and awareness. Just seeing holy objects can awaken positive qualities of mind (a bit like divine advertising!). \n\n
