Ven. Robina Courtin – MEDITATIONS on Four Immeasurables
Tuesday 13 September @ 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm
While it’s easy to recite the words, how can we nourish this practice so that we may experience all of the exquisite fullness that these virtuous minds have to offer?
Dynamic and charismatic, Australian-born Tibetan Buddhist Nun, Venerable Robina Courtin travels the world teaching Buddhist psychology and philosophy and helping those in need. Enjoy guided meditations with Ven. Robina in-person in the gompa, or online. Come to just one lunchtime event, or join us for all four.
The meditations will be based on the theme of the Four Immeasurables, (loving-kindness, compassion, sympathetic joy, and equanimity). These are mind-expanding thoughts that take as their object all beings without exception, as limitless as space.
May all sentient beings have happiness and its causes,
May all sentient beings be free of suffering and its causes,
May all sentient beings never be separated from sorrowless bliss,
May all sentient beings abide in equanimity, free of bias, attachment and anger.
These positive mental states create a sense of balance and unlimited abundance in our minds and attitudes towards others, and are an important method for weakening the self-grasping attitude that keeps us closed off from others.
So integral is this practice, that it’s known across all Buddhist traditions by many names, like the four sublime states, the four infinite minds, the divine abodes, or the four immensities as the Buddhist scholar Robert Thurman likes to call them.
While the meditations are rooted in Buddhist teachings, these teachings and practices are applicable to anyone from any background or religion, and all are welcome. Open to all faiths or no faith.
Presented by touring FPMT teacher:
“We have the power to look into our own minds, to recognize what harms us, and out of enormous self respect, we can learn to change the poison; we can learn to get rid of the neuroses. This is all Buddha is saying.”– Venerable Robina Courtin
