Shamatha Practice – Observing Mind

Cultivate a calm, clear and focused mind in this second course in the series on Shamatha, by observing thoughts and resting in awareness.

Over six evenings sessions we will learn how to cultivate and enhance our attention skills, how to strengthen our faculty of mindfulness. Within Buddhism this training is often referred to as shamatha practice – the practice of cultivating a calm, clear and focussed mind. Two variations of this practice will be presented during this program: 1) Observing thoughts, and 2) Resting in awareness.

These six sessions will focus on using the mind as the object. Although many people find this more challenging than focusing on the breath, this technique can bring us enormous benefits. Instead of being the slaves of our own mind, tormented by our thoughts, emotions and memories, this practice will enable us to become the masters of our own mind. And this practice can also lead us to gain insights into the nature of our mind.

– Individual classes are by donation. Please offer what you are comfortable with. You are most welcome to come to any or all of the classes!
– Purchase a package for $120 of zoom links to all 6 classes in the series. When prompted, enter promo code PACKAGE and the option will appear!
– Missed a class? If you cannot personally attend a class in the package, please email LTC and we can forward you a link to the soundfile so you can catch up.

This second course in the series will run over six classes in September, on a Monday and Friday night. If you cannot make it to all sessions, we encourage you to purchase a package and then contact us for the soundfile links to catch up. Glen will focus on observing the mind:

1. Observing thoughts (Mon Sep 07)
2. Observing emotions (Fri Sep 11)
3. Resting in awareness (Mon Sep 14)
4. Nature of mind (Fri Sep 18)
5. Stillness in motion (Mon Sep 21)
6. Open awareness (Fri Sep 25)

We recommend you do the previous course “Shamatha Mindfulness of Breath” as a preliminary to this course, as it will introduce you to the basics and set you up well to progress to this next, and more subtle, focal object of the mind itself.
