Saka Dawa (Buddha’s Birth, Enlightenment and Parinirvana)

A joyful ceremony to purify aeons of negativities and make mountains of merit, with poetic verses sung entirely in English.

This uplifting inspiring occasion, is the holiest day on the Buddhist calendar. The power of everything we do on this day is greatly magnified. It is a great day for spiritual activity, making offerings, and re-setting the course of your life.

Lama Zopa Rinpoche emphasises how the Shakyamuni Puja is so important, as a practice that purifies the obstacles and accumulates the necessary conditions, the merits. – such as the seven limb practice and mandala offering and the practice of requesting the merit field – that are done in order to receive blessings and for the mind to enter in the graduated path.

Lama Tsongkhapa, the Dharma King of the Three Realms, advised that: “When one listens to the teachings, if one cannot comprehend the words; when one reflects, if one cannot understand the meaning; when one meditates, if one cannot generate the realisation; when one’s mental capacity is so extremely small – depend on the power of the merit field.” This puja is a practice that does exactly that!

We recite praises to the Buddha based on stories from the Jataka, make copious offerings, personal dedications, and strew flowers to the ten directions! You will have the opportunity to make personal dedications for the sick and vulnerable, and the removal of obstacles. We also pray for the success of spiritual projects, the flourishing of Dharma and for all the resources needed to best benefit ourselves and others.
