Discover how to transform an often stressful and hyper-materialistic time of year into a cause of genuine happiness and enlightenment for all!
In this one-off class, discover how we can transform our annual gift-giving a cause for buddhahood. We can we make selecting Christmas presents more bearable, even enjoyable, and highly meaningful! In this class we look deeply into the nature of generosity, and the Buddha’s advice on how best to give gifts.
We are part of a largely Christian culture, whether intentionally or not, and many of us are uncomfortable about how consumerist the celebration of Christmas has become. In this class we discuss whether generosity is in the thing we give or the intention with which we give it. We investigate how when we just imagine giving things away, such as in a mandala offering, do we lose anything, or gain something?
Giving is primarily a state of mind, rather than the act or the substance. We can practice generosity even if we have no material thing to give.
Christmas is an opportunity to develop the perfection of generosity – the main cause of a perfect human rebirth. Creating merit by practicing generosity is essential for success in all other practices. Without merit we will never develop Bodhicitta or wisdom – no matter how hard we study, we won’t learn anything. By practicing the perfection of generosity, we can genuinely reflect the spirit of Christmas, and contribute to a more sustainable and peaceful world.

As soon as your object of concern changes from yourself to someone else, your heart is released from the bondage of the self-cherishing thought. As soon as you change the object of your cherishing, there is peace in your heart.Lama Zopa Rinpoche
