Impromptu Carol Singing

Kara McLeod and Ruth Gamble in Bodhgaya, December 2002

Ruth's Christmas

Guess how we spent Christmas? That’s right - as you would expect we went down to offer Christmas carols to His Holiness Karmapa and Kara sang him ‘We wish you a merry Christmas’ in her best Jazz diva style. Then he gave a short teaching on Christmas and (drum roll please) told me to translate it!!! So that means I have officially translated for the Karmapa so I have no life goals left for now and have to come up with a new one!

Kara's Christmas

Hi there everyone. I have just had an incredible audience with HH the Karmapa!! His secretary heard I was a singer and said that I had to sing, so I did! It was great. I thought, “I am starting to freak out here, so I will just think about it being a gig. Just for now!” and so I went into work mode. Half way through the little ditty (‘We wish you a merry Christmas!’ would you believe!) I dared to look at His Holiness, and he was just completely looking at me, with full attention and a smile. When I finished he said, “Thank you very much” etc!

His secretary said it was wonderful, as he loves to hear westerners laughing and having fun (without being disrespectful, obviously!). What a blast to have had some personal time with him! Sorry Mum, I completely did not remember to ask if he wanted anything! We had a teaching (Ruth translated and did an incredible job) about how Christmas is a celebration and that we should celebrate, and quite a bit more. But I am REALLY exhausted now, so I have to go and rest, love Kara
